A Year of Theory — Nearly There with Penn Foster

I began my Floral Design Career Diploma with Penn Foster in 2025 — an online, self-paced program built around mastering the theory and knowledge behind professional floristry. With just 2–4 weeks left, I want to reflect on how much ground this program has covered.

Because Penn Foster is distance learning, my journey so far has been deeply theoretical. I have studied the rich history of floral design and how it shapes modern practice, worked through design principles like balance, rhythm, proportion, and focal emphasis, and explored the five elements of design — line, form, space, texture, and color. I have learned about design styles ranging from Ikebana and Hogarth curves to contemporary hand-tied and waterfall arrangements, studied wedding and bridal floristry, funeral arrangements, plant care, dried and artificial flowers, holiday florals, and currently learning about the full business of establishing and running a floral shop.

The theory is there. The practical work — the actual hands in the flowers, the spiral stems, the pinched foam, the wired corsages — that chapter is just beginning. And I could not be more ready for it.
